The speech scroll—known in Nahuatl as tlahtolli—is one of the most beautiful and profound symbols in ancient Mesoamerican art. It represents spoken word, air, and sound—the act of creation itself. Artist and novelist Cesar Torres reinterprets this ancestral motif in his photograph Una Canción y Un Poema, a work that bridges the sacred and the modern through gesture, light, and the delicate transparency of pantyhose as a second skin.
This 5"x7" matte photo print captures the moment where the artist transforms the act of speech into visual form—embodying poetry, sound, and gender as an offering. The blue pantyhose worn in the image references the god Xochipilli from Aztec cosmology, whose essence flows through art, pleasure, and song. The image’s name, which translates to “A Song and A Poem,” ties directly to the Nahuatl concept of xochitlahtolli—the flowery, elevated word.
Printed on museum-quality matte paper, Una Canción y Un Poema can be displayed as a small art print or framed as part of a larger collection. Each print honors both Indigenous lineage and queer embodiment, inviting the viewer to consider how breath, sound, and identity intertwine.
