Why This Book Took This Long
Our Lord of the Flowers began as a web serial on Patreon in 2024, while my father was still alive. He passed before I could finish it. What had begun as a fictional meditation on grief became something else entirely — a direct confrontation with it.
I have had to re-enter this manuscript and rebuild it from the inside. Every chapter now carries the weight of what actually happened, and the weight of what I still do not fully understand about the man who raised me. That process takes time. It takes honesty. It takes a willingness to let the sculpture reveal itself rather than forcing the chisel.
The book you will read in 2027 is not the same book I started writing two years ago. It is deeper. It is more vulnerable. And I believe it is more true.
What This Novel Is
For those of you arriving to this story for the first time, Our Lord of the Flowers is a standalone literary novel. It is the most intimate entry in the Aztecverse to date — and the most structurally ambitious thing I have written.
The story moves through time the way memory does: not linearly, but in sudden eruptions of clarity surrounded by fog. Lord Vitrium, an established leatherman in Chicago, has been tasked by his sisters to clean out the house of their late father. But the book will also take the reader to many new places across time and history, spanning more than five centuries.
This is a book about houses. About fathers. About the things we inherit that we never asked for. About what the body knows when the mind refuses to look.
It is also, in the end, a love story.
Xochipilli and the Aztecverse
For readers of the Aztecverse, this novel marks a pivotal moment. Xochipilli has existed as a silent architect of my multiverse since I began building it in 2013 — a presence felt in the background of 13 Secret Cities, in the lush mythology threading through the How to Kill a Superhero series. But this is the first time he steps fully into the foreground.
